Crazy Horse is a specially-treated leather with a vintage, worn-in appearance which ages beautifully over time, effortlessly. For this reason, it’s grown in popularity amongst leather and fashion enthusiasts who embrace the natural, ever-changing characteristics of leather.
What is so special about Crazy horse leather?
Crazy horse leather is made by applying wax to the buffed full-grain leather surface, which gives it a smooth, soft feel.
The wax enhances the fibres of the leather and causes the leather to change its appearance depending on how the leather is being handled. Naturally, this type of leather will develop a character and patina a lot quicker than other types of leather.
When it’s new, it has a smooth, almost suede-like appearance and feel in your hands. Over time, Crazy Horse leather will absorb the oils from your hands, adding an even more beautiful character to your accessory.
Is Crazy Horse Leather made from horse leather?
Unlike what the name might indicate, this type of leather is not made of horse hides. Rather, it got the name because it’s a type of leather typically used to make horse saddle. Like most of our Leather range, our Crazy Horse leather is made from 100% cowhide leather.
Why does the leather look like it has scratches on it?
Because of the large amount of wax on the surface of the leather, the appearance of the leather changes much easier compared to other leather, when exposed to scratches/rubs. This is actually the unique characteristic of Crazy Horse leather, as it gives it a unique rustic, vintage look which ages beautifully over time.
How durable is Crazy Horse leather?
Crazy Horse Leather is also extremely durable and will hold up to years of wear. For this reason, it is chosen for saddles because it can hold up to the rubbing and abuse that saddles endure while still looking beautiful year after year.
Although the surface of Crazy Horse leather is more susceptible to light scratches, it is also durable in its own unique ways. These small scratches could easily be removed by rubbing your fingers on the area where the scratches are visible.
With the wax applied to the leather, it protects the leather with a level of water-resistance and makes it more durable.
Crazy Horse Leather Care
This sort of leather does not need any special treatment.
A Crazy Horse Leather can last for a long time with very little maintenance and care needed. The wax that is applied to the leather adds to the durability – even as it changes colour the durability of the leather remains the same.
Avoid rubbing with too much force on one spot and do not use wipes containing alcohol.
Colour transfer - I see this colour staining on the packaging. Will it stain my clothing?
Just like all leather, our leather has natural characteristics which may in turn result in variations in colour, shading or transferring of colour.
Colour may transfer from dark clothing or jeans to light coloured leathers or dark coloured leather to light coloured clothing when the product is being worn – especially at the start of using the product, but after two weeks it will not discolour things anymore.
Rubbing the leather with a clean dry tissue in the places of contact can speed up this process.
All our leather has natural characteristics which may in turn result in variations in colour, shading or transferring of colour.
The Crazy Horse will develop patina much more than our other leather range. It will eventually get darker and shinier as it reacts to the environment it’s put in and also the oil from your hands.
If you’d like leather that does not change in appearance too quickly, we would highly recommend getting our classic leather range.
Does this one have an inner lining/ cushion like the current one?
It does have a cushion effect like our current one, but we’ve actually implemented Crazy Horse leather for the outer and also inner side of the band. So the inside of the band also has Crazy Horse leather!
